Cleary, a well-known translator of books on oriental philosophy and practice, here simplifies Taoist concepts, hence the use of the term “practical” in the title. Sometimes the simplest is the most profound.

This is a more rigorous academic treatment of this complex topic. Over the past 20 years, Cleary has translated more than 50 Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian texts. He has a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Literature from Harvard but is not affiliated with any university.

The book is divided into three sections (history of Taoism, systems of Taoism, and Taoist practices). It explores the many varieties of Taoist practice and includes an extensive suggested reading list.
