Are you becoming concerned that your bout with seasonal blues has lasted longer, or is more intense than usual? How can you tell if this is only a short-term ”down time”, or if you may be dealing with a serious problem with (SAD)? Ought you to look for treatment from a physician? Find out about the symptoms of SAD, how this disorder affects sufferers, and what treatments are available.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is more than just feeling “down” because winter is coming. This disorder starts to develop in autumn, when the season moves toward winter and daylight hours are shortened. Symptoms usually start at some point during late summer or early fall. Moreover, because of the severity and consequences of SAD and other types of depression, physicians require extensive evidence of the condition before they are willing to make a definite diagnosis. Although symptoms can be very severe, physicians rarely diagnose a person with SAD until after he or she demonstrates symptoms for a minimum of three consecutive winters.

People who suffer from this disorder begin to have emotions of depression, reduced enthusiasm, and tend to sleep for long periods. They also report a dependence on carbohydrates or candy. In addition, the majority of persons who experience SAD also have immune systems that do not function adequately. Often, they find themselves becoming ill much sooner than persons who do not have SAD.

This disorder can negatively affect a person’s ability to function at work or at school. This decreased motivation often makes it difficult for a person even to get out of bed and tend to normal activities. Sufferers have trouble participating in social encounters, or even at home. These persons frequently have times of extreme anxiety and irritability. Sometimes, the problem becomes severe and disabling enough that victims even think about suicide and require hospitalization for treatment.

Interestingly, women appear to have a higher rate of SAD than men do. Furthermore, this condition usually improves yearly when spring arrives. Indeed, by March or April, symptoms typically subside or disappear completely – until autumn returns again. This is the case even in regions that are frequently cloudy or rainy throughout the entire year. In fact, almost one-fifth of the people treated for seasonal depression will at some point develop symptoms of bipolar disorder.

These sufferers primarily tend to be depressed during wintertime, but have normal moods throughout the rest of the year. In some cases, however, individuals report experiencing instances of unexpected elation, which is also called mania. As with other types of depression, SAD can become very serious or even result in disability if not treated properly. Additionally, many persons experience very low-grade forms of SAD; they may experience exhaustion, decreased vigor, and loss of appetite. These individuals, however, do not usually endure episodes of depressive moods or anxiety.

This kind of depression is relatively rare in sunny areas such as Tennessee, southern California, and Texas. Others, who reside in states with a large number of cloudy days, such as Ohio, Illinois, or Oregon are much more likely to develop this condition. Residents of countries such as Finland, Germany, and Ireland also struggle with seasonal depression.

Scientists have tried many alternative approaches to help people recover from this debilitating condition. They have experimented with placing people under artificial light in an attempt to help them manufacture more serotonin and reduce depression symptoms. Scientists have also worked with medicines such as antidepressants, as well as supplements, such as melatonin, to help treat these symptoms of depression. Many those who experience SAD also visit counselors during those times when they are suffering most greatly.

Each of these treatments have been used with varying degrees of effectiveness. All, however, are much more costly and time-intensive than two recently introduced, innovative methods. Hypnotherapy practitioners have refined the art of teaching both NLP and self-hypnosis strategies for depression. Through the latter method, individuals learn to talk themselves out of a depressive period and resolve their symptoms. These useful treatments, hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, have proven to have a phenomenal amount of benefit in helping clients to recover from, and avoid future problems with SAD.

Summary: SAD is a kind of depression that reappears each year at the same season. Only people who face this condition are able to choose whether to continue to fight the symptoms alone, over and over, or to seek help in healing from this disorder once and for all. Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming to treat depression are both effective, innovative approaches that provide a quick escape from these feelings without consuming enormous resources in terms of money or energy.
