I have been getting nausea before and during my period. When I started my period I wasn’t bleeding very heavily and I had sex and know I am spotting. What does that mean?

ANSWER

The symptoms you describe can mean a lot of different things, so the best advice I can give you if this keeps up is to see your doctor.

For instance, nausea before and during a period can just be one of a number of side effects of the menstrual cycle. Others include Cramps, Vomiting, Loose bowel movements/diarrhea, Constipation, Bloating in your belly area, Headaches, and Lightheadedness (feeling faint).

Or, it could be an ovarian cyst -  An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac in or on the ovary. Many ovarian cysts are noncancerous cysts that occur as a result of ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). These are called functional cysts. Functional cysts normally shrink on their own over time, usually in about 1 to 3 months. Often functional cysts do not cause any symptoms (you may not even know you have one), but other times they can cause abdominal pain, menstrual irregularities, nausea and vomiting.

Or, if you aren’t using adequate protection during sex you could be pregnant — you can still have a period if you are pregnant.

Spotting after sex also can have many causes — everything from “rough sex”, your body’s reaction to birth control pills (if you are using them), a variety of sexually transmitted infections, cervical polyps, fibroid tumors and so on. Some women have light spotting around the time of ovulation.

Good luck, and remember when situations like this occur it’s best to consult your healthcare provider as soon as possible. You’ll save yourself a lot of worry over issues that can often be quickly remedied.

All good things,
